Onions are a staple in many cuisines, adding a strong flavour and texture to many foods. They are also great to grow at home, and can be an incredibly rewarding experience to grow your own onions!

Planting

Onions should be planted indoors starting from February to mid-March. They need 6 weeks of growth before transplanting. In regions with milder winters, onions can be planted in late Fall to winter and will germinate during spring. When you plant the seeds, make sure to plant them only 0.25-0.5 inches deep in fertile, loamy soil. The ideal soil pH is 5.5-6.5.

Growth Guidelines

Onions need a constant source of nourishment from nitrogen fertilizers in order to produce big bulbs, with mositure being kept high in the top 8-12 inches of soil. They need 1 inch of water per week, so not as much as most veggies.

Onions should be harvested in late August and stored in a cool, dry place for several weeks. Onion harvesting typically begins when onion tops fall over and turn brown.
